About Me

My photo
I am a twenty-something second year teacher living in the midwest. I am a Christian woman and proud of it! I am the middle child of three girls. I am the proud aunt of the very beautiful Lil E and Lil C!! I love TV, movies, reading, and baseball. I am in my second year of teaching , but my first year teaching kindergarten. It has been quite the journey!

I love my family

So I went home this weekend. It was my cousin's fourth birthday, so of course I had to be there!

I left for home right after school was done around noon. I got home and relaxed and watched the Tigers on TV!!! It was very exciting; it was my first game of the year. Although it was annoying because it was dumb ESPN announcers and not our beloved Rod and Mario, alas I will have to keep waiting for them.

Then my Mom got home and we watched Say Yes to the Dress. We were horrified at the amount of money these women were spending on wedding dresses. This one lady came in with a $3,000 budget and wanted to buy at dress that was $6,800!!!! She said it probably equalled $1,000 an hour that she would be wearing it, craziness.

My Daddio came home early and we went test drive his new car- a pretty blue impala with heated leather seats. All I want in a car is automatic locks... *sigh* Then went to Pizza Hut, delish.

We stopped at Coldstone (I got mint with M&Ms and chocolate chips) and watched basketball. Well I fell asleep on the couch and woke up with 4 minutes left in the State game. But at that point it was tied, so I saw the most important part.

Saturday was my cousin's b-day. Since neither of my sises were there, I was the only other cousin to play with my six and four year old cousins. It was fun. We played hockey in the basement, dress-up, etc. And we had ladybug funfetti cake which turned your mouth a horrible shade of black if you didn't carefully shovel the cake into your mouth without letting it touch your lips. I wish I had a photo of my parents and I attempting this.

After the party we went to Fenton House for dinner. Ah-mazing!! Love their breadsticks- the best in the world. Then at home we watched some more basketball.

Sunday I pretty much got up and left. But it was a nice trip home. Can't wait to see them all (plus my sisters!!!!) this weekend :)

Naked Pilates....uh what?

So a few weeks ago I get an e-mail from my small group leader, asking if people still want to do naked pilates the next week. I left early the night before, so I'm like what????? I love these girls, but exercising (sp?) together while naked does not sound like my cup of tea. I figured it didn't really mean naked, but that it was organic and natural like naked granola...

Some people e-mailed back asking how much it cost, etc. I finally e-mail back (to everyone in the group) saying, what's this naked pilates about?

I get an e-mail back from one of our leaders saying, "If by naked pilates, you mean painting pottery at a place called naked plates...."

*crickets* *Jillibean bursts out laughing* *Jillibean runs to tell her roommates about her apparent lack of reading abilities*

Yes, I misread naked plates as naked pilates a couple of times and then admitted this mistake to all the young women in my small group, and I felt awesome. But actually it was a fabulous story, which gets brought up quite often.

Anyway the actual painting of the pottery was quite fun. These girls are amazingly creative and we all ended up with beautiful mugs! We have yet to take a group pic with them, but here are some pics I took of my mug.

I love the girls in my small group. They are a riot and fabulous, fabulous women of God!!! I am so blessed to have them in my life. <3

Percy Jackson- The Books

I just finished the first Percy Jackson book after seeing the movie last week. Whoa they are pretty different. There is one major character who creates the real problems isn't even in the movie...

I liked picturing Poseidon as Kevin McKidd even though the book said he had red hair. He looked much hotter in my mind. Ain't no thing.

I think my favorite thing about the book was its humor, specifically the chapter titles. They are all kind of weird and don't make much sense until you read the chapter.

Here are some of my favorites:
-Three Old Ladies Knit The Socks of Death
-I Play Pinochle With a Horse
-I Become Supreme Lord of the Bathroom
-I Ruin a Perfectly Good Bus
-A God Buys Us Cheeseburgers
-We Take A Zebra to Vegas
-I Battle My Jerk Relative

And my absolute favorite-
Grover Unexpectedly Loses His Pants

I would usually not pay attention to the chapter title until I got to the end of it and then I would go back and read the title and see how it related to what happened. Good times! Now on to book two.

Break it Down

Jillibean's Wardrobe

Start with a purple flowered, button-up top...
Add gray dress pants and my favorite purple flats!!! I especially love that when you walk they sound like heels, but they're really not.
Next make your hair wavy by sleeping in French braids (one of my favorite hairstyles. I shower at night, then French braid my hair right after. Go to sleep. Wake up the next morning and take out the braids. Voila!) Add a lavendar headband/tie thingy. (one of my students complimented me on my headband, I thanked her and told her that it is really a belt from a top I bought, but I didn't like it as a belt, so I use it in my hair :)
Accessorize with simple silver jewlery- big silver hoops and my Irish knot ring, complete with purple stone.

And tada! You have a fabulous, school appropriate ensemble!
Sorry the picture kind of sucks, I thought I got a better one...

Luck of the Irish

This St. Patrick's Day was fun for me becuase last May I visited Ireland. Ain't no thing. Except it is, because it was awesome and I dream about going back almost every single day of my life :) It was gorgeous and beautiful and amazing and I definitely recommend spending some of your life relaxing in the peacefulness that is the Irish countryside.

This morning my fabulous CT let me present some of my experiences in Ireland to my students, which was so much fun. So many of them have never left the country and know so little about other countries (ie Do they speak English in Ireland? Can you use dollars?) It was great to get to share my experiences with them especially about something I am so passionate about! We also were able to work in a go to college message, by telling them you can study all over the world if you go to college :)

I figured I would share some of the pictures I shared with my students, with you!!
This is a lake in Wicklow county (the county we took our day tour in) that we "hiked" out to.

Part of our merry band of travelers eating lunch at an authentic Irish pub.

Beautiful!!! It was so green it hurt :)

This walk through the forest seriously made me think we were in Narnia :)

The second scenic stop on our tour, gorgeous!! We may or may not have received a sampling of a traditional Irish adult beverage as we re-boarded the bus...

Some deer we spotted by the side of the road, we also saw lots of sheep. A student in my class said there are more sheep in Ireland than people, who knew?

Me by the Uppper Lake

A church we visited nestled next to a beautiful cemetary, which was built in 600!!

Some of the lovely ladies I traveled with next to the Irish Sea.

The beautiful cemetary we visited. There wer Celtic Cross tombstones taller than us!

I hope you enjoyed a short tour of Ireland!

Eight Hours of the Cutting Edge

(p.s [that's pre-script] none of these pictures are mine... credit to those to whom credit is due...)

So I was supposed to babysit on Sunday, so like a good kid I got all of my homework done during the day on Saturday. Then Saturday evening, the parents called to let me know the lil cutie was sick and they wouldn't need me Sunday. But I had no homework, so it was a day completely off, which was fabulous!!

How did I spend my free day you ask? Watching "The Cutting Edge" marathon on ABC Family? Yes, I'm that awesome. I had seen the first one before, but not the second or third and the fourth one premiered last night! Exciting stuff.
The Cutting Edge- the original. basic synopsis- male hockey player gets injured, switches to pairs figure skating with "difficult" female partner. She gets engaged to someone else, he miraculously becomes a fabulous figure skater overnight. The sexual tension builds, they compete at "nationals" and don't do well at first but manage to make the team for the Olympics. They get mad at each other, someone "sleeps with" someone inappropriate, the big competition comes, he confesses his love to her right before they go on the ice. They skate fabulously and live happily ever after.

The Cutting Edge 2-Going for the Gold- starring Christy Carlson Romano of Disney Channel fame. Male inline skater meets female pairs skater, decides to switch to skating after flirting with her. He stinks, he gets awesome, one of them gets engaged as the sexual tension builds (ps she's the daughter of the original cutting edge pair). They don't do well Nationals, but manage to make the Olympic team. They have a big fight over said engagement, the big competition rolls around, someone thinks soemone else slept with someone, before the final performance he declares his undying love for her, they skate beautifully, she returns his pledge of love... end of movie.

The Cutting Edge 3- Chasing the Dream. They decide to mix it up a little and have the female hockey player team up with a male pairs skater. She stinks, she gets better, he is engaged to some skanky blonde chick. The sexual tension builds. They stink at nationals but manage to make the world team because some guy fails his drug test. He sees his old girlfriend kissing his old coach and messes up, they get mad at each other. Worlds roll around, someone probably thinks someone slept with someone, but right before they go out on the ice he says he loves her, they skate great and all is well in the world.

Sorry couldn't find a picture for - The Cutting Edge: Fire and Ice- starring Adrian from Secret Life and Booth's bro Jared from Bones. Male speed skater (who has bobbleheads of himself) pairs up with female pairs star (from previous film) when he is banned from ss. He stinks, he gets better. There is a spark between them and they try to date, but he falls back into his promiscuousness. She gets mad. They somehow make it through Nationals and since someone gets hurt they make it to Worlds. She is mad becuase he is switching back to ss and he almost misses Worlds. Right before they go on the ice he tells her that he loves her, they skate, they win, they live happily ever after...

I have to say the last one was my favorite. First because it broke the mold a bit and had them at least try dating before he just declared his love before the biggest competition of their lives. Plus I found it to be the funniest- here are some of my favorite lines:
Male Speed Skater: What? A guy can't appreciate his lady friends jammies?"

MSS- "You should see my bobblehead, he's a cute little bugger."

Female skater- "I don't want to see you or your bobbleheads ever again."

FS-"That guy probably makes out with his bobbleheads."

MSS- "Your hotness in no way clouded my judgement."

Hilarious. Also and probably most importantly it had the hottest guy. I will show you and let you be the judge...

I'd have to say from hottest to nottest- 4, 2, 3, 1. How 'bout you?

Jillibean Gets Crafty, Part 1

Sometimes I like to be crafty. I really only craft two things, but I love it.

First I love to knit. I can't do really knitting (aka I've never learned/tried) but I can knit some rockin' hats. (I would tell you how, but my mom doesn't want our secret to get out. We've told some people the secret to our success and now she is sad that she has spread the love. Seriously, we saw a commercial on TV giving away our secret and she was upset... :) love her!)

Anyway, I think what I love most about knitting is picking out the color combos. For our hats you have to use two diff. colors of yarn at the same time. I love arranging the colors and picking out cute combos. It's the same reason I like helping my mom pick out fabrics for quilts or would love to plan parties/do interior design; I love mixing and matching colors; it's kind of my thing!

So here are some of my fab creations...

This is a baby hat I made. I've been making lots of baby hats recently 1) because they are fast to make :) and 2) because my big sis is having a baby in August!!! :D Since they don't know the sex yet, I'm making some gender neutral and some not. They get to find out in less than ten days!!!

Here is me modeling a lovely yellow, white and gray number. This is the first hat I've made that I am keeping. My mom, lil sis and I make a bunch of hats year round and then donate them.

I love this yarn- the white, yellow, purple, pink, gree and blue one. It matches everything!!

Cute lil baby hats!

Owen Hunt, Patrick Dempsey and the Olympians...

So today I saw Percy Jackson & The Olympians- The Lightning Thief, which is like the longest title ever. My friend has read all the books and keeps saying she'll loan then to me (...) so we went to see the film. I wasn't super excited, but I was up for it.

The movie started and who should wander onto the screen...

One Owen Hunt (aka Kevin McKidd in real life). Isn't he looking delicious in his army uniform? Yes our favorite Dr. Hunt is in Percy Jackson and suddenly the movie became much more interesting to me :) Sadly, he wasn't in in it much, but my friend assures me that he is more prevalent in the later books. Can't wait!! Plus now I'm glad I hadn't read the books because now Poseidon will always look like Kevin McKidd to me :D

Back to the movie- I thought it was really good- funny, some action, a bit of romance. Overall money well spent.

Plus I think the kid who plays Percy Jackson, 17 year old Logan Lerman, looks a bit like Zac Efron, which made me like him quite a lot. Here's a comparison for you...
First the ever fabulous Zac Efron

Now Logan
(not the best pic, but I have to work with what I can find- see the movie you'll know what I'm talking about.)

I know right? Check this out for a very nice picture of the handsome Logan: http://www.imdb.com/media/rm2727120384/nm0503567

Anyway the movie was good and seeing Kevin McKidd got me in the mood to see some more (movies) of him... So I rented Made of Honor, which is pretty much the best ever, because I love Kevin McKidd and I love Patrick Dempsey and anytime I can watch one show/movie with both of them, it is a good day (see Grey's Anatomy and Made of Honor). Plus in Made of Honor Patrick gets the girl, but Kevin gets the awesome accent! It's a win-win situation!!

Beautifulspice!!

Fav. quote from Percy Jackson- "It's like high school without the musical."

Fav. quotes from Made of Honor- "What are we going to do? Steal the Bride"
"I'm sorry I didn't kill anything for you."
"Ten years ago I got into bed with the wrong girl, but she turned out to be the right girl."
(ps all the pics are from google!)

Man, I Feel Like a Woman

Today I went to a Women's Expo with one of my besties. It was pretty fun and we got loads of free stuff. Plus we got massages and this hand treatment. Good times. Here's some of the awesomespice swag we scored...

Because you can always use more reusable shopping bags. Also I love "spoonculas!"

This guy did a spinal scan on my neck and I passed! And then received this fab DVD which I will be sure to watch everyday...

A small piece of Shammy, not to be confused with a shamwow. The live demo was pretty amazing, but we didn't shell out two payments of $9.99 for four shams, but if you call within the next ten minutes we'll double the order!

Chocolate!! We also got lots of free samples of energy drinks, veggie chips, bread, etc. Yum!

Free stuff from Meijer- because you can't leave a Women's Expo without some feminine hygiene products.

Nail files!

A random assortment of keychains, flower seeds, coupons and pens.

My second favorite thing I got- chapstick with a bank ad on it! A girl can never have too much chapstick. (p.s. just tried the chapstick- it sucks, all oily and smells kind of funky...)

Now the lead in to my favorite find...

This is the look on my face when I spun a Wheel of Fortune at a tanning booth and won a free t-shirt :)

Me upon seeing said t-shirt...

Yup, there it is, in all it's glory, there are really no other words.

A close-up in case you couldn't tell it is a man's bare chest with a gauge reading Vitamin D Levels... hot

Since I obvi can't get enough of this shirt.

Good times were had by all. Then we went and saw Percy Jackson...

10 March 2010

TV basically rules my life ;)

So I watch a lot of TV, a lot a lot. But I love it :) When the Olympics were on I didn't watch any other TV except for Lost and I got very behind on my essential shows. I have caught up just tonight :) Although I'm thinking of starting to watch a new show, so I'll have to catch up on that.

I thought I would share the awesomeness that is my TV viewing schedule, in case you are missing out on any of these fabulous shows.

Sunday-
8- Extreme Home Makeover- ABC- not a must see, but if I'm around I'll watch it. It usually makes me cry, which is always nice. This is a good show to watch while doing something else, like blogging or reading, as you don't have to pay careful attention.
9- Desperate Housewives- ABC- again, not a must-see, but if I'm around I'll watch. This is one show I did not bother to catch up on when I missed it during the Olympics. It is a show you can catch up with pretty well based on the "Previously on Desperate Housewives.
10- Brothers and Sisters- ABC- funny, touching, romantic, and just downright fun. This show follows the lives of a large California family of grown children and their exploits- political, romantic, familial, work-related, etc. Bonus- Gilles Marini of Dancing with the Stars fame as been guest-starring as a French love interest <3

Monday-
8- Dancing with the Stars- ABC- love this show! So much fun. I love watching the ballroom dancing, it is so beautiful! I have gotten to the point where I can identify dances and like to think that I could do them :) It is always fun to root for the cute guys with accents (ie Helio, Gilles, etc.) or the cute rodeo stars (ie Ty Murray) or the cute former pop stars (ie Drew Lachey) or the fabulous ladies that also rock the dance floor (Joanna Krupa, Brooke Burke, Kristi Yamaguchi). For the first seven seasons I correctly rooted for the winner from the beginning...

Tuesday-
9- LOST- ABC- basically the best show on television. If you are not watching LOST, it stinks to be you because you could never catch up, sorry. But it is mind-bending and mind-blowing, but at it's root it is about the characters and their lives and their relationships. Plus it makes me super tense, which results in a lot of squeezing of my stuffed monkey Cody. Plus Desmond Hume is hot stuff and Charlie is fabulous and Michael Emerson's acting is so incredible that you go from hating his guts to feeling sorry for him...
10- White Collar- USA- White Collar just had it's season finale, which will be nice given that I watch another show in the same time slot :) It's a fun detective type show, with a convicted white collar criminal (the very attractive Matthew Bomer) who helps the FBI solve crimes. Ended with a very explosive cliff-hanger.
10- The Good Wife- CBS- As a big fan of E.R., of course I had to check out the Good Wife starring E.R.'s Juliana Marguiles. She is fabulous. The show is about Marguiles solving cases as a lawyer as well as about her home life with her husband (a politician amidst scandal) and her two children... good stuff.
10- Parenthood- NBC- I haven't started watching this yet, but here it is good and I love Lauren Graham!! Now that White Collar's over I may have to check it out.

Wednesday-
Nothing, I usually just watch the White Collar from the night before.

Thursday-
8-Bones-Fox- I love Bones! Bones and Booth are fantabulous together. Also I love Sweets... and Hodgens and Angela... and the rotating interns... I am sad it has not been new lately.
9- Grey's Anatomy- ABC- Love, love love Patrick Dempsey. Love love love the guy who plays Owen Hunt (also in Made of Honor) who in real life has a marvelous Scottish accent!! Not as good as it was at it's start, but still must-see for me.
9- The Office- NBC- So hilarious!! Jim is amazing, Michael is crazy, Dwight and Andy crack me up continually. Kind of a weird brand of humor, but great!!

Obviously there's some overlap and when Glee (ahmazing!!!) starts back up in April that will be one more timeslot to double up (it will air against Lost!!) and once baseball season starts up again, there will be games to fit in as well!! yikes.

Why English Teacher Die Young

(I did not create this, my fab friend Jessie sent it to me, she knows me well :) My comments are in preceeded by an *

Every year, English teachers from across the country can submit their collections of actual analogies and metaphors found in high school essays. These excerpts are published each year to the amusement of teachers across the country.

Here are last year's winners...

1. Her face was a perfect oval, like a circle that had its two sides gently compressed by a Thigh Master.
*hehehehehe such a great visual!

2. His thoughts tumbled in his head, making and breaking alliances like underpants in a dryer without Cling Free.

3. He spoke with the wisdom that can only come from experience, like a guy who went blind because he looked at a solar eclipse without one of those boxes with a pinhole in it and now goes around the country speaking at high schools about the dangers of looking at a solar eclipse without one of those boxes with a pinhole in it.
*This one might be my favorite, first- it was the first to make me laugh out loud and second- the level of detail is intense and third I totes remember being little and some guy coming to my babysitter's house during a solar eclipse with a pair of these so we could look at the sun.

4. She grew on him like she was a colony of E. Coli, and he was room-temperature Canadian beef.
*Interesting because the first part is nice and the second part is grossspice

5. She had a deep, throaty, genuine laugh, like that sound a dog makes just before it throws up.

6. Her vocabulary was as bad as, like, whatever.
*true dat, I wonder if the student was trying to be ironic or if it just happened...

7. He was as tall as a six-foot, three-inch tree.
*a very specific simile.

8. The revelation that his marriage of 30 years had disintegrated because of his wife's infidelity came as a rude shock, like a surcharge at a formerly surcharge-free ATM machine.
*it IS ATM, NOT ATM MACHINE, which would be AUTOMATED TELLER MACHINE MACHINE rant over. I like the simile if only they hadn't written my pet peeve atm machine...

9. The little boat gently drifted across the pond exactly the way a bowling ball wouldn't.
*hmmm

10. McBride fell 12 stories, hitting the pavement like a Hefty bag filled with vegetable soup.
*I actually think this is a very good simile.

11. From the attic came an unearthly howl. The whole scene had an eerie, surreal quality, like when you're on vacation in another city and Jeopardy comes on at 7:00 p.m. Instead of 7:30.
*This is soo true! It is weird that Jeopardy is not on at the same time everywhere. My favorite is watching it on one channel at 7 and the other at 7:30 and knowing all the answers. :)

12. Her hair glistened in the rain like a nose hair after a sneeze.
*...

13. The hailstones leaped from the pavement, just like maggots when you fry them in hot grease.

14. Long separated by cruel fate, the star-crossed lovers raced across the grassy field toward each other like two freight trains, one having left Cleveland at 6:36 p.m. Traveling at 55 mph, the other from Topeka at 4:19 p.m., at a speed of 35 mph.
* :D

15. They lived in a typical suburban neighborhood with picket fences that resembled Nancy Kerrigan's teeth.
*Does Nancy Kerrigan have unique teeth? I never knew.

16. John and Mary had never met. They were like two hummingbirds who had also never met.
*Best Simile Ever

17. He fell for her like his heart was a mob informant, and she was the East River.

18. Even in his last years, Granddad had a mind like a steel trap, only one that had been left out so long, it had rusted shut.
*Poor Grandad, but this made me lol, for reals

19. Shots rang out, as shots are wont to do.
* I applaud the use of the word wont.

20. The plan was simple, like my brother-in-law Phil. But unlike Phil, this plan just might work.
*Awesome! A simile and an insult to Bro-in-law Phil at the same time.

21. The young fighter had a hungry look, the kind you get from not eating for a while.
*lame and not funny

22. He was as lame as a duck. Not the metaphorical lame duck, either, but a real duck that was actually lame, maybe from stepping on a land mine or something.
*Are you currently picturing a duck who lost a leg due to stepping on a land mine? poor little guy.

23. The ballerina rose gracefully en Pointe and extended one slender leg behind her, like a dog at a fire hydrant.

24. It was an American tradition, like fathers chasing kids around with power tools.
*hahahaha

Tale as Old As Time

This weekend I went home and my family and I went to see the Broadway production of the greatest Disney Princess movie ever...

Beauty and the Beast!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My sister and I were super excited because we love Belle and the whole movie! When we were little we were both Belle for Halloween and my Mom has promised to get me a Belle costume to wear every Halloween when I'm a teacher :)

We went out to dinner at Olive Garden before hand (delic!) and my sis and I were singing all of the fab songs from the movie!!

When we got to the theater we walked over to the souvenir shop. I saw Belle dolls and Beast dolls and then I saw the Belle crowns. So of course I bounced up and down and said, "I want a crown, I want a crown, I want a crown!!" Of course my fam laughed at me :) But it was all in good fun. My parents generously bought us t-shirts. I got a cute red one with roses painted on it. Thanks Mom and Dad!!

It was so fun to see the little girls dressed up in their princess dresses, buying ten dollar velvet roses :)And the little boys clutching their Beast dolls :)

Then the show started- we were in the first row of the first balcony- great seats!!

The show was aaaaaaaaaaaaaamazing!!! The performers were really talented- great singers, great dancers, great comedy!! They did such a wonderful job with the special effects like the fabulousness of the Be Our Guest number and the Beast's transformation back to a human. So well done!

The movie is hilarious and so was the musical

"Flowers, chocolates, promises you don't intend to keep."

"No one persecutes harmless crackpots like Gaston."

Hilarious!!

It was so beautiful! The stage and sets were gorgeous as were the costumes. Belle's yellow dress- so fabulous!! Can't wait til I have one of my own!

It was amazing I would definitely recommend seeing it if you every get the chance!!
